The Blue Devils and Their Blue Titles
Does the word Blue in the title equal championship???
The reigning, defending DCI World Champion Blue Devils have released their 2022 program titled Tempus Blue. Let's take a look at their trailer!
You're probably thinking a few things:
1. Uhhh, Championship!
2. I can do all those dance moves but I don’t want to.
3. ANOTHER blue-themed show, Devils???
Actually, they don't go with the blue title as often as you think. Since the group started officially using show titles in 1990, they have only had the word Blue in five of their production titles. And since everyone reading this is thirsty for placements, this is how those five shows placed at DCI Finals:
1992 - Big, Bad, And Blue
4th Place
1996 - Club Blue: A Gangster's Chronicle
TIED DCI World Champion
2001 - Awayday Blue
TIED 2nd Place
2004 - The Summer Train Blues MIX
2nd Place
2006 - The Godfather, Part Blue
3rd Place
If you're thinking these guys have show-titled themselves out of a DCI Championship this year, think again. Since 2006, there has been a massive shift in concept and design with The Blue Devils. The result has yielded nothing less than a Silver Medal every year since then. In the last 15 years, the only reason these people haven't gone more than two years without a title is because a virus tried to eat everybody.
All eyes are going to be on this group not only because they have almost as many Championships as you have fingers and toes, but all the hard "corps" fans are hungry to know what a two year hiatus looks/sounds/feels like. The game has changed a ton since Quarantine 2020. The Blue Devils consistently have one of the oldest groups in DCI, but with a two year hiatus, veteran leadership will be a challenge for everyone who opted out of the 2021 Celebration Season. We shall see how the Blue Smoke holds up.
