In an exciting development for drum corps, seven Midwest drum corps are joining forces to host the "Midwest Combine Experience Camp." This event, taking place on Sunday, Oct. 22nd, is aimed to provide aspiring drum corps members and enthusiasts with a unique and accessible opportunity to delve into the world of DCI.
The participating corps, which include the Blue Stars, Cavaliers, Colt Cadets, Colts, Madison Scouts, Phantom Regiment, and River City Rhythm, are planning a day full of education, instruction, and fun for all participants. This is not a new concept, as a few of the California corps have held joint audition camps in years past. That said, few events have been of this scale, and none quite like this.
Brad Harris, Director of the Blue Stars, expressed his excitement about this collaborative effort, stating, "We are thrilled to collaborate with our Midwest Combine partners to offer this unique experience to introduce the next generation of drum corps members to what the activity is all about." He added, "It is our hope that by working together in this format, we will support the continued growth of the activity and share in the development of future performers."
Bojan Hoover, Executive Director of River City Rhythm, also shared his enthusiasm for the event, saying, "River City Rhythm is excited to participate in the first-ever, 'Midwest Combine Experience Camp,' with six other DCI Midwest drum corps." He continued, "Our organizations met several times in 2021 to share resources, best practices, and plan performance opportunities with one another as we returned to the field following the pandemic. We hope to continue offering similar experiences in the future to grow the drum corps activity in our region."
Notably, this is not an audition camp, though the corps may be extending invitations at the conclusion of the event to their official auditions. Additionally, as this is a one-day experience, campers will be expected to provide any transportation needed.
