Hidden GEM: Gold's Trumpet Soloist Should Be Given 80 More (Gold) Bars
Seriously, this person is GOOD!!!
Can we all agree that drum corps soloists kick all the booty??? Good. I thought so. As a former soloist myself (Yes, an oboe solo COUNTS), I can tell you firsthand that the amount of pressure you feel right before your big moment is immense and intense. After that moment, you either crush the solo or you don’t. It is as simple as that.
Gold Drum and Bugle Corps is based out San Diego, California. They are a DCI Open Class Corps. The nerds reading this already know that, but the average fan may not be as well-versed in what is happening with Open Class Drum Corps. Well, guess what? You should be because not only are they a quality unit, they feature one of the best soloists in DCI this year. And this person only needed six bars to earn that distinction.
I have no idea who this person is, if they’re an Age-Out, or how they like their eggs. In fact, I’m not even allowed to play you a clip of the audio because I’ll be thrown into a van and featured on the new content channel FloCops. Instead, you’ll just have to suffice with a grainy screenshot of this person nailing their trumpet solo in the ballad just after the tuba trio.
Gold’s show has been streamed a few times already this season and every time, this soloist absolutely makes the ballad! Gorgeous clarity and maturity of sound during The Sound Of Silence. I’m being VERY serious when I say that you need to be somewhere listening to this person play. My only wish is that this person has their moment extended by 80 bars. MAKE IT HAPPEN, GOLD!!!
Why am I making such a deal about a six-bar solo from an Open Class group? Because that six-bar solo from Gold is freakin’ good, and a solo that is freakin’ good translates across Open and World Class Drum Corps. Keep both ears open when Gold hits the field next time.
